Connecting During COVID
Emily Carr University's fieldwork course Making Across Abilities: Co-Creation for Social Change was sponsored by posAbilities and taught by Aaniya Asrani in the Fall of 2020, as the world adapted to living in a global pandemic. The course explored and enacted how community engaged art and artistic practices can foster, build, and sustain human connection, even within the COVID context.
In socially and physically distanced times, this work is increasingly important as vulnerable and marginalized people often become increasingly invisible and isolated. Students were invited to imagine and explore a series of virtual and place-based interactions in their own neighbourhoods. Each of them developed a concept, a proposal and invitations in their neighbourhoods. Their aim was to foster connection to themselves, others and place.
