The Neighbourhood Organizing crew is back together again.

This time to enact the ‘Dig Up The Dirt’ project they collaboratively conceived during the Subvert-a-thon that ran in September 2024. The Subvert-a-thon was two weekends where neighbours came together to come up with novel solutions to challenge social norms that are keeping us apart and disconnected in Vancouver.

Dig Up The Dirt specifically addressed the issue of disconnection from place, by sharing local plant knowledge about plants that have a “bad reputation.” These plants are easily classified as weeds but actually have so many benefits to us humans.

Passersby at Kingsgate Mall got a chance to experience the “enchanted forest” where plants talked to them and shared their stories and personalities. Invited in by bird sounds, folks were given a little clue ‘seed’ to seek out which plant it belonged to. In this game the goal was to guess the plant correctly and walk away with a pot of soil, wildflower seeds, and new knowledge about a local plant!
